In this role I assist staff in running the group therapy sessions, having experience in mental health, not only in my A levels through studying Psychology, but also reading many books.  This includes “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat”, (Oliver Sacks 1985) where the book talks about various cases of patients with schizophrenia, as well as “The Anatomy of Violence”, (Adrian Reine 2013) that talks about how our biology may interfere with a person’s decisions making.

I work with staff to identify risks, welcome people, and create a comfortable environment when they arrive. I believe I have gained valuable experience in customer service, and this has led me to find and enjoy training opportunities.

I don’t just see this as work experience but as a befriender role who regularly visits patients and builds a rapport with them, engaging in conversation and accompanying them on walks around the hospital grounds. It is very refreshing to hear the interesting life stories told and learn cool and useful lessons they don’t teach you in school.
