Edward Timpson MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, celebrated with students from Wye School, as part of an event aimed at developing girls’ confidence in and through sport.   The X-Elle event was led by four-time Olympic ski racer Chemmy Alcott and supported by Team GB hockey star Alex Danson, in their roles as Sports Ambassadors for United Learning. The elite athletes held activities  and confidence workshops for girls from Wye School as well as those from two other United Learning schools, Lambeth Academy and Walthamstow Academy.

The programme is part of United Learning’s contribution to the national priority of inspiring girls into sport, and has been supported by Women in Sport.  The girls who took part in the X-Elle event have been empowered to lead the development of girls’ PE and sport in their schools, so that even more students can benefit from the programme.

The Minister said of the event:  “As part of our plan for education, we want to get all young people into the habit of playing and enjoying sport. In doing so, it’s important that girls have the same chances to get involved.  Ambitious women like Chemmy Alcott and Alex Danson are excellent role models for young people, and show what can be achieved through dedication, discipline and determination.”

Our pupils were thrilled at the chance to meet some sporting heroes and had this to say about the day:

“X-Elle was an amazing opportunity.  I know I enjoy sport although that doesn’t mean I’m really confident.  I’m looking forward to passing the message on to other girls” Taela

I thought the day was amazing.  I really enjoyed meeting Alex and Chemmy.  Alex has really inspired me to be a famous hockey player and Chemmy was awesome, talking about her injuries and what has got her to where she is.” Millie

I thought the day was an amazing opportunity, it boosted my confidence having the chance to share my thoughts about sport.  It was very enjoyable and I would love to do something similar another time.” Morgan

The day helped me become more confident.  It was an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget.” Sienna
