On Wednesday 6th May Wye School welcomed Julian Thomas, Head Teacher of Caterham School, part of the United Learning group, to talk to staff and students about his journey from the coast of Antarctica to the bottom of the world.  His description of his 950 km adventure in aid of Bliss, a charity for premature or sick babies, across the frozen landscape describes one of the most challenging treks on earth.  He raised £15,000 for the charity.  Our students were told how only around 300 people have ever completed the full journey, without mechanical or wind assistance, since Amundsen in 1911.

Julian also treated the students to photographs and videos of some of the most extraordinary parts of his adventure including the development of snotsicles at the end of each day and how his feet seemed to be on fire.  Eating was also a tricky task with the torment of having to hold chocolate and cheese in your mouth until it had defrosted.
