Literacy at Wye School

At Wye School, we believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for success across all subjects. As a school we focus on:

  • Raising standards in reading and writing to support academic achievement
  • Developing confident communicators through oracy and discussion
  • Fostering a love of learning by encouraging curiosity and independent reading

Our literacy strategy ensures every student has the tools they need to thrive, both in English and across the curriculum.

NGRT Reading Tests

All pupils in Key Stage 3 complete the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) and these are reviewed bi-annually. This nationally recognised assessment helps us:

  • Identify reading ages and comprehension levels
  • Track progress over time
  • Pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed

Reading Interventions

For students who need extra help, we provide targeted interventions such as:

  • Small, group reading sessions focusing on decoding and comprehension
  • One-to-one support for pupils with significant gaps

Guided Reading Programme

Our Guided Reading Programme introduces students to a wide range of texts and genres. Students read and discuss books during form time, developing critical thinking and vocabulary. Some of the texts include:

  • Refugee Boy – Benjamin Zephaniah
  • Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman
  • Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo
  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Bedrock for Literacy Homework

To strengthen vocabulary and grammar, all KS3 pupils use Bedrock Learning as part of their homework. This online platform:

  • Builds academic vocabulary step by step
  • Tracks progress and celebrates achievements
  • Supports reading and writing across all subjects

For more information on how you can support your child with their Bedrock homework please see: Using Bedrock as a parent or guardian – Bedrock Learning Support Hub

Oracy in Form Time

We value spoken language as much as written. During form time, pupils take part in oracy activities such as:

  • Reading on current affairs topics
  • Discussions to build confidence
  • Vocabulary challenges to improve speaking skills

Reading doesn’t stop in English. We encourage students to explore books linked to other subjects.
