On Tuesday year 7 and 8 students were treated to live Physics demonstration shows, here at Wye School in our ‘big space’. These were presented by Liz Hutchins from the Institute of Physics. The show included optical illusions, a ‘whoosh bottle’ rocket, experiments with dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) and smoke rings made with an air zooka. One of the optical illusions resulted in ‘seeing’ the person next to you, looking quite different to usual! The whoosh bottle also made a big noise and big flame, which made everybody jump. Several students became volunteers assisting with the demonstrations. These included Megan W, Daniel B, Isabella B, Amy L, Jacob B, Chandrika N, Megan C and everyone who had sat on the front row!

Feedback from students included:

We were very involved with the presentation. It was very fun and entertaining.

I enjoyed the circles of smoke at the end, it was really cool.

I was interested to know that dry ice does not become a liquid, it just goes from being a solid to the white smoke that we saw coming out of the box.

Our thanks goes to the Institute of Physics, David Cameron (one of our governors) who helped to arrange the visit, as well as Michelle Cook (our Science technician) and site team for preparing everything behind the scenes.
