This year we had another fun packed science week full of lunchtime activities around the theme of Space. Coke-splosion (mentos and fizzy pop) never fails to provide entertainment! Students enjoyed ‘Eat like a spaceman’ making their own ‘astronaut’s pudding’ and sampling different flavours of freeze dried ‘ice cream’. Secret messages were written on filter paper, which then slowly burnt to display the letters. A group of students will now be taking forward the ‘Rocket Science’ project, growing rocket seeds which may or may not have been in Space. This will contribute towards a nationwide schools double-blind experiment to see if having been in zero gravity, effects how the seeds grow. Mrs Williams (our Chair of governors) gave a talk about a project her students at Ashford School were involved in, where they actually sent a science experiment involving crystals into space. Our most science superstar of the week, who attended all of the session was Ben Hollis, read his full report below!

Year 7 Ben Hollis’ report on British Science Week.

The coke-splosion was a fun activity as we put mint mentos into coke. We started off with a small amount of coke in a concial flask and it was a small reaction. Then we went outside with coke and orangeade, where we put seven mentos into each using a special tube. The reaction was two metres tall and we predicted that the orangeade would be a bigger reaction, which it was.

The space food was a tasty activity as we have five flavours of space ice cream to try. My favourite flavour was the freeze dried mint choc chip, it was very tasty. This was my favourite activity.

Lighting the touchpaper was fun, like all of the activities. It was an enjoyable activity of drawing onto filter paper with chemical and then burning it, so that the writing showed up.

The week was a fun activity and they should do something like this every other week with new activities. My favourite of them all was the space ice cream because we ate food.

We were also pleased to be joined on Wednesday by 14 G&T Year 5 students from Lady Joanna Thornhill’s for a Chemistry session in our laboratory. The students used Bunsen burners, carried out flame tests and worked out how to make a pH scale rainbow. Thank you to our students who helped support this session Elliot Carlton, Maddie Exell and Mark Boughton.
