British Science Week was launched on Monday with Miss Phillips and Dr Gowen sharing with students their past studies and careers. Dr Gowen explained what a PhD is and the area which she researched. Miss Phillips explained her reasons for her choice of degree and gave examples of the jobs which she had in the food industry in Research and Development roles. A few photographs also showed some of the fashions of the time!

Tuesday saw a group of students extracting DNA from strawberries. It is actually a surprisingly simple experiment which reveals the material which contains the amazing code of life. Students were fascinated to see this with their own eyes.

Meanwhile another group of students talked to Mrs Bishop about the importance of plants. In this informal setting they were able to ask questions and get an insight into what Mrs Bishop used to do for a living when she was a research scientist.

Yesterday we decided that it was high time that Wye School carried out it’s own investigation into which fizzy drink explodes most spectacularly when mentos are added. We can reveal that our extensive research points to diet coke as the overall winner, but that ginger beer, orangeade, cherryade and appleade were all strong contenders. Students were excited to complete the experiments. They said “Mentos and coke were amazing – the cola went right up into the tree”, “Cherryade was a great to watch – we almost got showered with fizz”.

Today students took part in the Design Technology Choc-a-bloc Challenge. Students were given a section of chocolate bars and instructed in the art of ‘chocolate welding’. The challenge was then to construct the tallest structure possible in 15 minutes. The winners were a group of year 7 students - Lily, Bethany, Larisa and Harriet. Congratulations to them. The best part of it was that students were able to eat the results!!

There is still more fun still to come as part of Science week – see below for details.
