Kent School Games Sportshall Athletics Finals at Medway Park – Monday 8th February

Final Results: We’re so excited!

Year 7 – 2nd Place

Year 8 – 5th Place

Following the success of the Ashford District competition, where both our Year 7 and 8 boys’ teams finished 1st, our Year 8 girls finished 2nd and Year 7 girls 3rd, our boys qualified to enter the Kent County Finals in Medway. They were faced with more than 10 schools from across Kent to show their skills in running, jumping and throwing events.

The Year 8s performed excellently as a team, and with a number of PB’s across a range of disciplines, managed to reach a deserved 5th place in the whole of Kent. For a year group with less than 45 boys to choose from, against a whole host of schools with huge cohorts, including many grammar schools with excellent reputations for sporting success, this was a massive achievement. The boys couldn’t have given any more effort in their events, and they all saw improvements in their times and distances in comparison to their original PE lessons, and the District Competition. Fantastic effort and well done.

The Year 7s defied all odds with their performances in the final. Under similar circumstances to the Year 8s, they managed to reach an outstanding 2nd place, and definitely helped to put Wye School on the map. Mr. Woodard (and some of the spectating Wye parents) were stood in a state of disbelief when the results were called out in reverse order. Losing out only to the Simon Langton Grammar School of Canterbury, this is a truly incredible achievement.

Both of these results show the quality of the talent that Wye School students can offer in the sporting arena. It shows that size really doesn’t matter in terms of competing with the other schools at the highest level.

Thanks to all of the parents who came to spectate at both the District and the County competitions.
