On Wednesday 9th March 2016, 12 Year 9 boys made their way to Sunbury-on-Thames in Middlesex to participate in a Rugby Development Day and competition. The event was organised by Shaun Dowling, who is Head of Sport for United Learning, and was designed introduce and develop students’ rugby skills. It was also a chance for our students to meet and play against students from other schools within United Learning and strengthen Wye School’s position within the group.

The event was hosted at the Hazelwood Centre, which is a superb rugby facility in the idyllic setting of a former golf course. Boasting 7 pitches, including a dedicated 3G rugby pitch, it was an excellent way for our students to progress their rugby. London Irish coaches delivered a training session in the morning, before the boys sat down for a hot lunch, followed by a friendly Rugby 7s tournament in the afternoon. Wye performed well in both of their matches – winning the first and losing the second. This meant they finished 2nd place overall and definitely showed off the talent that has emerged in Wye School.

Overall this was an excellent opportunity and fantastic day out, that was confirmed by the London Irish representative who said, "I would just like to comment on the maturity and good behaviour of the children in attendance, as well as the flexibility of staff, as this greatly contributed to the smooth running of the event.
